
Bees Come Back But Can't Hold On

Burlington, IA (July 12, 2009) - The Burlington Bees three-game series with Lansing is even at a game apiece after a 6-5 loss Sunday afternoon at Community Field. Eric Hosmer had three RBI and Jason Taylor hit his second homerun of the season but it was not enough for the Bees to clinch their first series of the second half.
Lansing scored the first two runs of the ballgame scoring one run in both the second and four innings. The Bees scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nick Van Stratten led the inning off with a double and then scored on a Hosmer RBI single. The Bees then took the lead scoring two runs in the fifth inning. With one out, Shawn Griffin singled and moved to second on a Marc Maddox single. Van Stratten then walked to load the bases for Hosmer. Hosmer then singled to score both Griffin and Madox and the Bees led 3-2.
Lansing took the lead back in the top of the sixth scoring three runs. After a walk and a hit-by-pitch, Balbino Fuenmayor hit a three-run homerun. The Bees tied the game back up in the bottom of the sixth inning. Taylor led the inning off with his second homerun of the season. Jose Bonilla then doubled and moved to third on a ground-out. Griffin then doubled to score Bonilla and tie the game 5-5. Lansing scored the final run of the game in the top of the eighth inning. In the bottom of the ninth, Van Stratten missed a game-tying homerun by just a few feet and the Bees had the tying run on at second but could not get any more runs across.
Mike Lehmann got the start for the Bees. In 5.1 innings, he allowed five runs, four of which were earned, on six hits with one strikeout and two walks. Eric Basurto took the loss to move to 0-1. In 2.1 innings, he allowed one run on three hits with five strikeouts and one walk. James Thompson pitched the final 1.1 innings and did not allow a base runner.
The Bees outhit Lansing 10-9. Van Stratten, Hosmer and Griffin each had two hits. Hosmer had three RBI.
The Bees conclude the three-game series with Lansing on Monday evening at Community Field. Manauris Baez is the scheduled starter. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30.
