Wild Things\' pitchers shine in victory

Richmond, IN- Matt McDonnell pitched six solid innings, leading the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, to a 6-2 victory over the Roosters in Richmond, Ind.

McDonnell (5-2) gave up one run on three hits while striking out three. McDonnell's mound opponent, Richard Barkley (4-3), hurled six innings, striking out five batters while giving up two runs on six hits.

Washington (29-13) got things rolling in the first inning when Jack Headley and Jon Cahill each led off with singles. Mike Arbinger's base hit drove in Headley and Cahill scored on L.J. Biernbaum's groundout.

Richmond (18-24) cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first on Kevin Brown's single, driving in Blake Woods from second base.

McDonnell settled down to retire 13 of the next 14 batters, but Richmond threatened in the sixth. With runners on the corners, McDonnell got Brown to pop-out to short, ending the inning.

The Wild Things added four much needed insurance runs in the ninth to take a five-run lead. The Roosters added a run in their half of the ninth with a solo-home run by Brown off B.J. Borsa

Washington and Richmond continue their series Monday at 8:05 p.m. Ryan Ewin (3-1, 4.50 ERA) will make his sixth start of the season for the Wild things and face Curt Moenter (2-2, 4.86 ERA).
