July 4, 2004 - Frontier League (FL)
Richmond Roosters News Release
Richmond, Indiana - The Evansville Otters used a five run eighth inning to bust open the game on Saturday night and defeat the Roosters 12-5. The Otters stayed within a 1/2 game of the Washington Wild Things in the Frontier League Eastern Division. The Roosters dropped two of the three games in Evansville and now look to take on Washington in a series in Richmond.
The Otters' bats got to Richmond starter Klent Corley in the second inning. Evansville put up four runs and forced Roosters manager Chris Mongiardo to go to the bullpen. The Otters added one more run in the third to go ahead 5-0. The Roosters retaliated with a two run home run by Kevin Brown in the top of the sixth to make it 5-2, but Evansville responded with a run in the bottom half to extend the lead back to four. Evansville's Carlos Brackley hit a towering blast out of the park to begin the seventh and it was 7-2 Otters. The Roosters again rallied and managed three runs in the eighth. Kevin White and Kevin Brown scored on a two RBI single by Trevor Hall. Josh Hollingsworth then drove in Drew Miller with a hit. Miller had previously walked to reach base. The Roosters rally ended when Tony Sanguinetti grounded out with Richmond trailing 7-5. However, that is as close as the Roosters would get as Evansville scored five runs in the eighth inning to seal the win.
Saturday's game was delayed by rain for nineteen minutes in the eighth inning after a heavy shower hit Bosse Field. The rain lasted for just a short period and play promptly resumed. Klent Corley (0-1) never got out of the blocks as he gave up four runs in 1 1/3 innings and was tagged with the loss. Dave Campos provided 3 2/3 innings of relief and allowed two runs. Ryan West pitched one scoreless inning and Bo Moore went 1 1/3 while giving up six runs, four earned. Andy Anderson threw the final 2/3 of an inning.
Grant Williams (6-0) did not have his best performance of the year, but it was good enough to win. Williams pitched 7 2/3 innings and allowed five runs from eight hits while striking out five. Bryan Simmering got his third save of the year as he went the final 1 1/3. Evansville has now won eight of the last ten games they have played. The Otters represented the Eastern Division in the Frontier League Championship Series in 2003 when they were swept by the Gateway Grizzlies.
The Roosters (18-23) begin a very important series against the first place Washington Wild Things on Sunday. The Roosters are now 10 games back of Washington. Richard Barkley (4-2, 1.71 ERA) will start for the Roosters. Barkley pitched a complete game shutout against Washington back on May 27th in his first start this season. Barkley is coming off a complete game victory over Kalamazoo last week. Game time is set for 6:35pm at McBride Stadium and the game will be followed by the 2004 Independence Day Fireworks Show sponsored by Argosy Casino & Hotel.
