WASHINGTON, PA- The Washington Wild Things earned the series victory against the River City Rascals with a 7-2 win on Thursday, July 30 at CONSOL Energy Park. Washington starter Tim Flight struck out five batters in six innings to improve to 3-5 while his mound counterpart Joe Scanio was charged with the loss.

The Wild Things accelerated to an early lead in the bottom of the first with singles by Matt Ford and Sam Mende setting up the scoring. An RBI single by Scott Kalamar and RBI double by David Popkins to give the Wild Things a 2-0 lead. Shortstop Austin Wobrock continued his All-Star season with an RBI double to left field, scoring Kalamar, Popkins and Heck extending the lead to 5-0.

The Rascals cut the lead to four when second baseman Hector Crespo scored the unearned run on a 4-3 putout for out number two in the top of the second. The Rascals threatened to score in the fifth, but an over-the-shoulder catch in deep center field by Danny Poma prevented the runner from advancing.

The scoring continued into the sixth when infielder Carter Bell hit his third home run of the year to extend the lead to 6-1. An RBI single from Andrew Heck in the seventh inning again increased the lead for the Wild Things to 7-1. River City managed to add a late run in the top of the ninth, cutting the lead to five, but that would not be enough as the Wild Things went on to win by a final score of 7-2.

The Wild Things will stay at CONSOL Energy Park for the remainder of the week as they host the Florence Freedom for a three-game series beginning Friday, July 31. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. For tickets, please visit the Wild Things front office, call 724-250-9555 or visit www.washingtonwildthings.com.
