Slammers Shut out by Boomers 7-0

Schaumburg, IL- Schaumburg Boomers (26-27) starting pitcher Taylor Thurber tosses a complete game shutout against the Joliet Slammers (26-27) in the Boomers 7-0 win on Thursday night.

Schaumburg got on the board in the third inning against pitcher Michael Carden. DH Mike Schultz walked to lead off with a walk and reached second on a wild pitch. 2B Jordan Dean singled and CF Alexi Colon did the same to load the bases. With one out SS Craig Massey doubled to left to drive in a pair. Colon was thrown out at home for the second out. Massey would score on an RBI single by 1B Willi Martin, extending the Boomers lead to 3-0.

The Slammers struggled at the plate against righty Taylor Thurber, only putting a runner in scoring position in two different innings. Carden hung in the game until the seventh inning. Catcher Michael Valadez led off the seventh with a double. Dean drove him in with a two-out single knocking Carden from the game. Reliever Luke Crumley came in and got the Slammers out of the inning.

The Boomers padded their lead with two more runs in the eighth. Down 7-0 in the ninth, Joliet quickly put a pair of runners in scoring position against the starter Thurber. Both SS Alfredo Rodriguez and pinch hitter Mason Snyder reached on an error by the 3B Cam Sherrer. But 1B Carlos Lopez popped out and LF Phil Bates flew out right, ending the Slammers threat.

With the complete game shutout, Taylor Thurber improved his record to 1-1. Michael Carden took the loss, falling to 3-3. The Slammers will be back in action on Friday against the Frontier Greys. The first pitch is at 7:05pm (CST) at Silver Cross Field with fireworks to follow the game. You can watch the contest live on SlammerVision.
