Lake Erie Crushers Split DH with Florence
July 30, 2015 - Frontier League (FL)
Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers split their Thursday afternoon double header with the Florence Freedom, falling 4-2 in game one, before taking the finale, 2-0 at All Pro Freight Stadium.
The split for the Crushers (26-34) marked the series that they've lost since the All Star Break, while the split for the Freedom (30-33) gives them five wins in nine tries against the Crushers this season.
The first game of the day was a continuation of a game that was suspended due to rain after the top of the first inning on Wednesday night. Florence used a four-run fourth inning to win game one, 4-2, while Lake Erie tossed a three-hit shutout to take game two, 2-0.
Florence got all of their runs in the fourth inning of game one. The inning began with a solo homer from Zach Mitchell, his first of the season. Andrew Godbold stroked a one out double, and he scored on Justin Harris's two-out RBI single. A double steal, which resulted in an errant throw from catcher Jose Barraza, ended up in center field and allowed the next two runs to score, completing the four-run fourth.
Lake Erie was held scoreless on just two hits by Chuck Weaver (4-3) over the first seven innings of the game, before scoring twice in the bottom of the eighth inning. Emmanuel Quiles started the inning with a single, and made his way to third on Trevor Stevens's double down the line in right. Quiles scored later in the inning on Austin Prott's groundout, before Chandler Brock drove Stevens home on a two-out RBI single through the left side of the infield.
The Crushers put a little bit of a threat together in the bottom of the ninth, but nothing came of it. Anderson Hidalgo led off with a walk, and they had the tying runs aboard after Quiles was hit by a pitch later in the inning with two outs, but Ed Kohout (13) retired the next batter to put the game away.
Weaver scored the victory for the Freedom, allowing two runs on five hits over 7.2 innings while fanning eight batters. Kohout worked a scoreless ninth to earn the save and Trevor Longfellow (4-4) allowed four runs, two earned on four hits over three innings of relief in the loss.
Both teams had squandered chances to score over the first five innings of game two, before the Crushers hit a pair of homeruns in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead. Jose Barraza hit a solo homer over the wall in right-center, his second of the homestand, and Anderson Hidalgo followed with a solo homer to right, his fifth of the year.
The combination of Toddy Kibby, Mike Devine (2-2) and Daniel DeSimone (4) tossed a three-hit shutout in game two. Kibby didn't factor into the decision, but threw five scoreless innings and allowed just three hits, while Devine tossed a perfect sixth inning to score the win, and DeSimone tossed a perfect seventh to grab the save.
Three Crushers hit safely multiple times in game two, including Prott, who reached in both games, extending his on base streak to 28 games in the process. Hidalgo and Boo Vazquez also turned in multi-hit games in the second game, while Juan Sanchez was the only Crusher to hit safely twice in the first game of the day.
The Crushers will begin a three game series with the Traverse City Beach Bums at Wuerfel Park on Friday night. Right-hander Hunter Adkins (3-4, 2.57) will start for the Crushers. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
