Laster Fans 12, Rascals Split Doubleheader

Washington, PA - The Rascals (34-28) split a doubleheader with the Washington Wild Things (26-36), losing Game 1 2-1 and winning 6-1 in Game 2.

The Wild Things walked off in the bottom of the seven inning in Game 1. LHP Stephen Frey (L, 1-3) faced only Austin Wobrock and surrendered a lead off double in the seventh. RHP Will Schierholz then walked a batter and surrendered an infield single to load the bases with no outs. RHP Derek Cape then entered the game, and Matt Ford hit a groundball to RF Jackson Slaid, who was playing as the fifth infielder. Slaid's throw home was not in time and Washington won 2-1.

RHP Tim Koons started Game 1 and surrendered just one run over 5.2 innings. He received a no-decision despite striking out eight and walking just one batter. RHP Zac Treece tossed 0.1 inning of relief.

3B Taylor Ard hit a solo homerun, his 20th, in the first inning to give the Rascals an early lead. Washington tied the game in the third on a Ford RBI triple.

Washington starter Luke Wilkins allowed just one run with five walks and five strikeouts over 6.0 frames. Steve Messner (W, 2-1) threw 1.0 scoreless inning and received the win.

LHP Lucas Laster (W, 2-2) tossed his second complete game in Game 2. He fanned a career-high 12 batters, the most by any Rascals pitcher this season. He allowed just three hits and three walks; the only run he allowed and two hits came in the seventh and final inning.

The Rascals took a 4-0 before Laster even threw a pitch. CF Curran Redal led off the first with a single, and LF Brian Hansen walked. After a wild pitch, DH Danny Canela hit an RBI groundout. 2B Hector Crespo hit an RBI single, and 1B Zach Kometani followed with a two-run hit.

Ard hit his second solo shot of the day in the third inning; his 21 homers and 53 RBI lead the Frontier League. The Rascals added one more run on a Slaid double in the fifth.

The Wild Things' only run came in the seventh when David Popkins triples and scored on a single by Andrew Heck.

Ard went 4-for-7 with two homeruns, two RBI, three runs scored, a walk, and a steal in the twin bill; Kometani had four hits and two RBI.

The Rascals and Washington Wild Things finish their series on Thurdsay, July 30 at CONSOL Energy Park at 7:05 p.m. EST.
