September 1, 2021 - Frontier League (FL)
New York Boulders News Release
The Washington Wild Things scored three times in the first inning and went on to down the New York Boulders, 4-2, and complete a sweep of the teams' doubleheader on Wednesday at Wild Things Park in Washington, PA.
The Wild Things had taken the opener, 5-3. The sweep enabled Washington to tie the Sussex County Miners for the top spot in the Frontier League's Northeast Division.
In the nightcap, back-to-back triples by Scotty Dubrule and Grant Heyman staked the Wild Things to a 2-0 lead. A Hector Roa sacrifice fly then made it 3-0 after one inning.
An inning later, Tristan Peterson's sacrifice fly extended the Washington advantage to 4-0.
The Boulders would cut their deficit in half to 4-2 after 5ý innings thanks to a run-scoring single by Zach Kirtley in the third inning and a solo home run off the bat of Phil Capra in the sixth. The long ball was Capra's seventh of the season.
Andy Hammond was tagged with the loss for New York, lasting only 1 1/3 innings and allowing four runs on four hits to go along with two walks and no strikeouts. The loss dropped Hammond to 4-2 on the year.
James Mulry relieved Hammond and held Washington scoreless over the next 4 2/3 innings. He allowed just one hit while walking a pair of striking out three.
Meanwhile, Rob Whelan started for Washington and worked his way in and out danger for 3 1/3 innings over which he surrendered seven hits and one run while walking two and striking out five.
Ben Vicini came on for the Wild Things and went 2 2/3 innings and allowed one hit on two hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out four, picking up his second victory of the year against no losses.
Vicini gave way to start the seventh to Dan Kubiuk, who tossed a perfect seventh inning to earn his first save of the season.
The Wild Things took the opener, 5-3, as three pitchers combined to allow only six New York hits and Trevor Casanova knocked in three runs.
Ryan Hennen started for Washington and went the first five innings, allowing an unearned run on four hits while striking out five. He did not walk a batter and picked the win, his 10th of the season against three losses.
Kubiuk and Zach Strecker each pitched an inning to close out the win for the Wild Things - each allowing one run with Strecker recording his 20th save of the season.
The Boulders jumped ahead with an unearned run in the third inning when Hennen threw wildly to third and allowed Ray Hernandez to score.
Washington tied the game in the fourth on an RBI single by Casanova, then moved ahead with four runs in the fifth - the scoring coming on an RBI single by Andrew Sohn, a two-run single by Casanova and another when Grant Heyman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The Boulders would get a sixth inning run-scoring double from Kevonte Mitchell and an RBI groundout in the seventh by Max Smith to close to within two runs. However, Milton Smith, Jr., the tying run, flied out to center to end the game.
Robby Rowland took the loss for New York. He allowed four runs in 4 1/3 innings of work on six hits. He walked two and struck out three. Rowland fell to 1-3 with the loss.
