Washington Wild Things News Release
WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, fell to Evansville Thursday night, after a wild pitch gave the Otters the upper hand, and eventual win of 6-1.
A tied game kept fans on the edge of their seats, until the seventh inning when a wild pitch brought in Evansville right fielder Jose Hernandez to score the leading run. Until then, solid pitching efforts from both Washington and Evansville kept each team's offense at bay.
First baseman Doug Thennis scored in the first inning on an Estee Harris bases-loaded walk, putting the Wild Things on the board first. Washington's lead was quickly silenced when Evansville shortstop Jared Jordan's sacrifice flyout tied the game at 1-1.
The tie breaker came in the eighth inning when a wild pitch was thrown by reliever Davis Bilardello, allowing Hernandez to score and giving the Otters the lead. Additional runs throughout the eighth inning widened the gap leading to the win.
Washington starter Gary Lee (1-4), who received the loss, delivered 7.1 innings with one run on nine hits, two walks, and three strikeouts. Relievers Davis Bilardello and Ross Gusky combined to pitch 1.1 innings.
Starting for Evansville, Matt Trent threw six innings with one run on three hits, four walks and strikeouts. In relief, Joey Satriano (3-0), Patrick Crider, and Josh Cephas collectively pitched three innings for the Otters. Satriano received the win.
The Wild Things hit the road this weekend to take on the Florence Freedom in a three-game series. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:55 p.m. on 95.3 FM WJPA.
