LOVES PARK, Ill. - Will Block's ninth-inning sacrifice fly capped a Southern Illinois comeback as the Miners beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 6-5, on Thursday at Road Ranger Stadium.
The RiverHawks lost leads of 1-0 and 5-3 and dropped the rubber match of a three-game series.
The Miners scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to tie the game at 5-5. Reliever Corey Frerichs walked leadoff hitter Sean Coughlin, threw a wild pitch, then with one out, walked Nate Hall. Ken Gregory singled in Coughlin and forced Frerichs from the hill. Closer Brett Durand entered, and with two outs, gave up Justin Randall's game-tying single.
Durand (3-4) gave up an unearned run in the ninth. With one out, Eric Suttle walked. He stole second base and went to third on an errant throw by catcher Carlos Dominguez. Block hit a fly to center field to drive in the go-ahead run.
Southern Illinois reliever Ryan Quigley (4-1) got out of a two-on, one-out jam in the eighth inning with a double play and got the win. Clayton Dill retired the side in order in the ninth for his fourth save.
The RiverHawks hit into four double plays.
