Normal CornBelters News Release
Early Beach Bums offense paid off as the Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, dropped the rubber game of the series at Wuerfel Park in Traverse City, Michigan, losing 7-1 on Thursday night.
Traverse City got to CornBelters starter Brett Lester early, scoring twice in the first inning with three singles and two walks, with RBI's coming from a Jose Vargas base hit and a walk to Jeff Flagg. The Beach Bums continued the attack in the second, as two walks to start the inning came around to score thanks to a sacrifice fly from Vargas and an RBI single from J.T. Hall to put the Bums up 4-0 after two innings.
The Beach Bums picked up more scoring in the fifth when J.T. Hall led off with a triple and scored on a fielder's choice to build the lead to 5-0.
The CornBelters finally scored in the seventh when Mike Mobbs singled in Steve Alexander, who reached via his 17th double of the season.
The Beach Bums put their third two-run inning on the board in the eighth when CornBelters reliever Gary Perinar walked Chris Kay to lead off, followed by a double by Zack Pace. After a walk to Jose Vargas to load the bases, Kay scored on a wild pitch and Pace came home on a sacrifice fly from J.T. Hall.
David Deminsky (4-2) went the distance for the win, giving up six hits while striking out six. Brett Lester (4-5) took the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits while walking five and striking out three.
The CornBelters continue the second half of the road trip with a weekend series at Road Ranger Stadium in Loves Park, Illinois against the Rockford RiverHawks in the teams' first meeting. Ryan Sheldon (7-5, 2.85 ERA) is the projected starting pitcher for the Belters. Game time is 7:05 p.m. with pre-game on WEZC-FM 95.9 and WJBC.com at 6:50.
