Joliet Slammers News Release
JOLIET SLAMMERS (39-28) @ GATEWAY GRIZZLIES (28-39)
Thursday, August 4 - 7:05 p.m. CT
GCS Ballpark - Sauget, IL
Game #68 - Road Game #36 (39-28, 20-15)
RHP #33 JAKE RENSHAW (7-4, 3.38 ERA) vs. RHP #19 BRAD STONE (0-5, 7.55 ERA)
Last Time Out.
Oak Lawn's Erik Lis hit two home runs and New Lenox native Josh Flores tripled twice as the Joliet Slammers (39-28) defeated the Gateway Grizzlies (28-39) by a final score of 9-2 Wednesday night. Joliet started the offensive barrage right away as Brad Netzel doubled in Josh Flores in the first inning. Netzel would then score on a single and an error. Gateway kept pace for awhile but just like Tuesday the Slammers pulled away down the stretch. Flores' two triples were both of the RBI variety as they scored Ben Hewett both times with two outs in the second and sixth innings. Meanwhile Lis smacked a solo shot in the third and a two-run homer in the eighth. Tommy Mendoza went five solid innings to pick up the win and the combination of Jeremy Tietze, Chuck Lukanen, and Ryan Quigley pitched the final four innings to finish up the game.
For Starters.
"Captain" Jake Renshaw is coming off a very strong outing against Lake Erie where he went eight innings, giving up only one run on four hits. Renshaw is tops on the Slammers in Wins with 7 and has thrown a team leading two complete games. He was a 10th round draft pick out of Ventura College by the Chicago Cubs in 2006. He was originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 26th round in 2004 but did not sign. Renshaw spent two years with the Cubs organization and pitched two years at the high-A level with the Orioles organization. The 25-year old right hander put up excellent numbers last year in the Golden Baseball league as he posted a 2.39 ERA in 16 appearances.
The best of the best.
The Slammers have the best ERA in the entire Frontier League at 3.62. In addition, they've held opponents to a league low .238 batting average. The bullpen has been especially strong, compiling an ERA of 2.82.
#Winning.
The Slammers are a season high 4.5 games up in the East Division. They've held first place by themselves since the end of play on July 8th. Before then they had not held first place by themselves all year. The Slammers are also a season high of 11 games over .500. With a victory today the Slammers would win their fourth in a row, which would be their longest winning streak of the season. The Slammers have not won or lost more than three games in a row all year. This is the seventh time they have won three games in a row.
Road Warriors.
The Slammers have won five of their last six series on the road. In addition, they've swept two of those series as they swept Normal right before the All-Star break and Lake Erie July 27-29. Joliet's record of 20-15 on the road is the best in the East Division and second best in the Frontier League. With a win today the Slammers would match their longest road winning streak of the year at six games.
Clutch hitters.
David Fox (.419 in 43 AB's) and Brad Netzel (.367 in 60 AB's) lead the team in batting average with runners in scoring position. As a team the Slammers are hitting .272 with runners in scoring position. The Slammers are only hitting .234 as a team when leading off an inning.
Aggression.
Joliet's hitters like to swing the bat as evidenced by their league low 225 walks.
Leading after six.
The Slammers are almost unbeatable with a record of 28-1 when leading after six innings. However they are 5-25 when trailing after six.
The team triple crown.
Erik Lis leads the Slammers in batting average (.320), Home Runs (15) and RBI (58).
