Washington Wild Things News Release

The classic turnpike rivalry featuring the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns favored the visiting Lake Erie Crushers as they defeated the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, 9-1 on a Steeler-themed Saturday night at CONSOL ENERGY Park.

The Washington Things 2012 All-Star representative and right-handed flamethrower Gary Lee took the loss, starting the game and throwing seven innings, giving up eight runs on 11 hits while striking out three Lake Erie batters.

Similar to last night's affair, the Crushers scored early in the first on an Andrew Davis RBI groundout, scoring Kevin Bedard who was plunked on the game's first pitch of the evening.

Three innings later, in the top of the fourth, Daniel Bowman's RBI single scored Max Casper to put the visiting squad ahead by two. In the same frame, first baseman Russell Moldenhauer collected his third RBI of the series, smacking an RBI triple that slightly grazed the top of outfielder Nick Akins' glove. Ahead 4-0 and with runners on the corners and one out in the fourth, second baseman CJ Beatty and AJ Nunziato turned a nice 6-4-3 inning-ending double play.

Washington plated their only run in the bottom of the sixth when number three batter and third baseman Jovan Rosa, who leads the team in batting average, doubled in outfielder Darian Sandford. Sandford, who remains atop the Frontier League standings in stolen bases, collected his 17th and 18th stolen base on the year swiping second and third before scoring.

Lake Erie would stretch out their lead in the top of the eighth plating five more runs on several base hits with bases loaded.

Despite having bases full in the bottom of the ninth, the Things' miraculous comeback imitative fell short to the Crushers in the second game of the weekend series.

The Wild Things play their final game of the homestand Sunday at 5:05 against the Lake Erie Crushers. Tickets are still available at the CONSOL Energy Box Office and can be purchased by calling 724-250-9555 or toll free 1-866-456-WILD.
