First Team to Chalk Up 40 Victories This Season
The Washington Wild Things (40-24), presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, defeated the River City Rascals 5-3 at Falconi Field Wednesday in front of a sell out crowd of 3,334. The victory increases the Wild Things lead in the East Division to three. This is the Wild Things seventh consecutive victory.
The Rascals scored first in the first inning, but the Wild Things answered when Randy McGarvey hit an RBI single to tie the game.
In the fifth inning, River City scored again for a 2-1 lead when Mike Madrid hit a solo home run (his 14th of the season and his 60th RBI).
Again the Wild Things answered in the bottom of the inning when Lance Koenig scored Matt Swope and Mike Arbinger scored Chris Sidick; the score improved to 3-2.
In the sixth inning the Wild Things added an insurance run when Sidick hit a sacrifice fly to score Koenig.
McGarvey homered in the seventh for the final score of the game.
Starter Brian Burks (9-2) gets the win, going six innings, allowing eight hits, two earned runs, walking one and striking out five. Mike Grady, Stephen Spragg, Corey Ohalek, and Jim Popp combined for the final three innings, allowing two hits, one run, walking two, and striking out three. Jim Popp got his league-high 11th save of the season.
Matt Swope continued his hitting streak. The outfielder has had hits in 24 consecutive games.
The Wild Things and Rascals meet for game two of the three-game- set Thursday when first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Air time on WJPA 95.3 FM and www.msasports.net is 6:55 p.m. FSN Pittsburgh will carry the game live; check your local television listings.
