Mavericks update

August 3, 2005 - Frontier League (FL)
Mid-Missouri Mavericks News Release

After a day off, the Mavericks hit the road for a long (distance) six game trip. Tonight the Mavs play the first of three against the Richmond Roosters (first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM). Richmond, Indiana is approximately 429 miles from Columbia, Missouri.

Then on Saturday, the Mavs travel to the Eastern most city in the Frontier League - Washington, Pennsylvania - to play the Wild Things. Washington is approximately 258 miles from Richmond and is approximately 695 miles from Columbia. The Mavs return to Taylor Stadium on August 9th, as they play host to the Gateway Grizzlies.

Road Relief...

After going just 1-5 on their most recent homestand, the Mavs hit the road for six games (three against Richmond and three against Washington). The Mavs fell from 5th to last place during the homestand. Mid- MO currently sits at 21-40 - 1 game behind the 5th place Windy City Thunderbolts.

Monday night, the Mid-Missouri Mavericks fell to Washington 11-8 in the finale of their six-game homestand at Taylor Stadium. The Mavericks dropped their fourth in a row despite ripping 18 hits off a quartet of Washington hurlers.

Five of those 18 hits belonged to first baseman Thomari Story-Harden, who compiled a sizzling 5-5 evening at the plate. Story-Harden's first hit, a single fisted out to short left field, prompted Brent Metheny to score the game's first run in the bottom of the second. That run also ignited a see-saw battle which included six lead changes over the next five innings.

Washington was able to secure the lead for good with a 4-run seventh, capped off by a mammoth Mike Arbinger solo HR off the roof of the right-center warehouse. The moonshot, which traveled an estimated 450 feet, made the score 10-7 Wild Things, and the league's best team did not look back from there.

Jesse Ellison, in his Mid-Mo debut, allowed 11 hits and three earned runs over five innings, chalking up a no- decision. Eziquel Perez (0-1) was saddled with his first loss in relief, doling out six hits and three earned runs in two frames of work.

Fundraising Thermometer nearly topped off!

As you walk through the front gates of Taylor Stadium...up the stairs and to the right...you will find the U.S. Cellular / KPLA / KRCG Fundraising Thermometer. The Mavs have been filling the thermometer with each fundraising event and each Community Night. And now...it's almost full!

Thanks to the fantastic organizations that have worked with the Mavs this season, and thanks to the fans that have supported these organizations, the Mavs have donated over $23,000 back to the Mid-Missouri community so far in 2005!

The Mavs' Monday Community Nights were a completely original idea in 2005. The Mavs agreed to donate 100% of game-day ticket sales to various organizations. And, with the help of these organizations and the fans, the Community Nights have been a big success! Last Monday night, the Mavericks were able to donate over $3,200 to the United Way of Central Missouri. And the Columbia Council of PTA's received nearly $4,500 from the Mavericks due to great support on three Monday nights.

In the second year of group fundraisers, the Mavericks and numerous organizations have been able to work together to raise thousands of dollars. The Salvation Army was able to raise over $1,300. The Rockbridge Girls basketball team raised $1,080. The Children's House- Montessori raised over $1,250 and the Hallsville Little League raised $1,780!

A special thank you should go out to the Mavericks' Director of Group Sales and Fundraising - Natalie Anderson. Her tireless efforts have helped the Mavericks raise over $23,000 for the Mid-Missouri community.

Another thank you should go out to the Mavericks' Director of Community Relations - Ann Wilhelm. She has been responsible for donating hundreds of tickets and countless souveniers to worthy organizations. She also makes sure that Marshall Maverick is out in the community - supporting the area we all call home!

It's not too late to help the Mavs help Mid-Missouri. One Community Night remains - August 29th. 100% of game-day ticket sales will benefit the Columbia Police Foundation and the Missouri Children's Burn Camp. It's also not too late to get your organization involved in a group fundraising event. Simply click on the link below for more information.
