Washington Wild Things News Release
ROCKFORD, IL - The Washington Wild Things took on the Rockford Aviators in the first game of a three-game series on Friday, July 10. For the second game in a row the Wild Things found themselves down late in the game, and for the second time they were able to pull out the victory. Reliever Jeremy Holcombe earned the win in his first professional appearance from the bullpen and Rockford reliever Colby Holmes was given the loss in a 6-3 thriller.
Rockford was able to get out to an early lead in in the bottom of the second inning when right fielder Dusty Robinson scored on an error. The Aviators would add to their lead in the fourth inning with an RBI single from third baseman Elijah Trail. This was then followed by a run scored by second baseman Cody Lenahan on a fielder's choice.
The Washington bats were stalled until the seventh inning. With two outs, the Wild Things managed two singles to set up all-star short stop Austin Wobrock. Wobrock smashed a two-run triple and in the following at-bat, first baseman Sam Mende gave Washington the 4-3 lead with a home run.
The Wild Things added two more runs in the later innings, including a home run from left fielder David Popkins to give him his league-leading 14th homerun.
The Wild Things received a great effort from their bullpen following the 3.1 innings pitched by Richie Mirowski. The Washington bullpen gave up only three hits in the final 5.2 innings to help the late offensive effort.
