River City Rascals News Release


O'Fallon, MO - The Rascals (24-23) split their doubleheader with the Lake Erie Crushers (19-26) on Thursday, July 9 at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. After a rainout on Wednesday, the Rascals won Game 1 in extra innings 3-2 and lost Game 2 by the score of 8-7; the Crushers took two out of the three game series.

The Rascals won Game 1 in walk off fashion. With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning with one out, RF Jackson Slaid singled, and 3B Taylor Ard doubled down the right field line. Slaid scored from first, and the Rascals won their second walk off of the season.

Ard led off the second inning with a solo homerun for the first run of the game. He now leads the Frontier League with 13 homers.

Lake Erie tied the game in the fifth when Juan Sanchez doubled, stole third, and scored on a Jose Barraza single. Then in the sixth, Trevor Stephens walked and scored on a double by Austin Prott, taking a 2-1 lead.

Slaid led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk. SS Johnny Morales then doubled and drove home Slaid to knot the game 2-2.

RHP Will Schierholz (W, 2-0) faced just two batters but earned the victory after tossing 0.1 inning. RHP Joe Scanio received his first no-decision of the season. He surrendered one run on six hits and walked a season-high two batters. Scanio tossed 4.1 innings, just the second time this season he has not completed 5.0 frames.

Kolby Moore (L, 1-2) surrendered one run in 0.2 inning and took the loss. Crusher starter Brad Zambron allowed one run and six hits in 4.1 innings of work.

RHP Derek Cape was charged with a run in 1.1, and RHP Zac Treece and RHP Zeb Sneed combined for 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.

RHP Ray Hanson started Game 2, his second start of the season. He surrendered four runs on 10 hits in a no-decision. Hanson did not walk a batter and struck out six over 4.2 innings. RHP Heith Hatfield (L, 2-2) took the loss after allowing four runs in just 0.1 inning.

Lake Erie took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Prott reached on a dropped third strike to begin the frame. Sanchez then doubled, and Anderson Hidalgo hit a two-run single. Kevin Zak followed with an RBI single of his own.

The Rascals tied the game in the third. C Josh Ludy walked, stole second, and advanced to third base on a single by 2B Hector Crespo. CF Curran Redal hit an RBI groundout, and LF Brian Hansen hit a two-run homer, his third, to tie the game.

Ard led off the fourth with a walk and went to second base on a groundout. Ludy then singled home Ard before Crespo hit an RBI double to right field.

Barraza, Joey Burney, and Zak each singled to load the bases with two outs in the fifth inning. Turner Gill would drive in one on a single, but the Rascals escaped the jam with a 5-4 lead.

The Crushers exploded for four runs in the sixth inning. Stephens singled, swiped second, and scored on a hit by Sanchez. Following a Hidalgo single, Barraza doubled in another run. Zak then hit a two-run single, taking an 8-5 lead.

The Rascals responded immediately with a run in the bottom of the inning when Morales walked and Crespo hit an RBI double.

Then in the bottom of the seventh inning, Hansen drew a leadoff walk. Following two outs, Slaid doubled to right field and scored Hansen. A throwing error allowed Slaid, representing the tying run, to advance to third base, but he was stranded there.

Crushers starter Zach Morton did not receive a decision after allowing five runs over 3.1 innings. Matt Brankle (W, 2-1) earned the victory after tossing 1.2 scoreless frame. Trevor Longfellow (S, 7) allowed one run in 1.1 inning.

Treece tossed 0.1 inning and pitched in both games. RHP Chandler Jagodzinski threw 1.1 inning of relief, and RHP Marc Rutledge added 0.1 inning out of the bullpen.

The Rascals open a three-game series with the Gateway Grizzlies on Friday, July 10 at T.R. Hughes Ballpark at 6:35 p.m. CDT.
