Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

EDINBURG - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings ended the regular season with a 9-0 loss to the Edinburg Roadrunners in seven innings in game two of a doubleheader on Sunday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The Roadrunners (50-39) got on the board against Tate Kelly (0-1) in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Osiel Flores beat out a groundball for a hit, stole second and scored on a ground-rule double by Eddie Wilson. Albert Gonzalez followed with an RBI-single to make it 2-0.

With two outs in the bottom of the third, Nelson Teilon launched his eighth home run to make it 3-0.

Gonzalez led off the bottom of the fifth and Adam Matos walked. Robert Matlock followed with an RBI-double to make it 4-0.

The Roadrunners loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the sixth. Gonzalez hit an RBI-single to knock out Kelly. Welington Dotel moved from first base to the mound and allowed an RBI-fielder's choice to Adam Matos, an RBI-groundout to Matlock and Felix Molina's seventh home run of the season to complete the scoring.

Kelly pitched a career-high five innings in his first-career start, striking out a career-high four while allowing nine hits and three walks.

That made a winner of Mark DiBernardo (9-5), who retired all five batters he faced, striking out two, while escaping a bases-loaded jam in the top of the fourth.

The WhiteWings (47-45) stranded 10 base runners, including five in scoring position.

The WhiteWings open up the playoffs against either the top-seeded Amarillo Dillas or second-seeded Roadrunners on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at Harlingen Field in game one of the best-of-three semifinals. Tickets can be purchased by calling the WhiteWings at (956) 423-WING (9464), by stopping by the Harlingen Field box office, or online at whitewingsbaseball.com. Right-hander Steve Raburn (5-3) is expected to pitch for the WhiteWings.
