San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, TX - The Colts got two homers and some clutch relief pitching on Saturday night as they defeated the Amarillo Dillas 5-2 at Foster Field in game one of a three-game series.
San Angelo started the scoring early as a two-run homer in the second inning by Josh Collazo (17) gave the Colts a 2-0 lead. Amarillo would pick up a run in the fourth, as a throwing error by Collazo on a force attempt at the plate cut San Angelo's lead to 2-1.
But with the bases-loaded and one out, starter Bryan Heaston snared a line drive by Amarillo catcher Brian Bueno, then threw to first to double-up third-baseman Rob Recuenco and get San Angelo out of the jam while allowing only one run. The Colts then took the momentum from that double-play and scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth on two-out RBI singles from catcher Stephen Yoo and centerfielder Ronnie Gaines to make it a 4-1 ballgame.
San Angelo plated another run in the sixth on a solo-homerun from third-baseman Landon Camp (22), before an RBI double by Amarillo leftfielder Adam De La Garza trimmed the Colts' lead to 5-2.
In the eighth, Amarillo put runners at first and second with no one out, forcing San Angelo to go to their bullpen and bring in right-hander Caleb Rodgers. The Waxahatchie, TX native would respond by striking out first-baseman Alberto Cruz, before an infield single by Recuenco loaded the bases with one out. Rodgers then got Bueno to pop-out to first and second-baseman Jermel Lomack to ground out to first to get the Colts out of the eighth inning unscathed.
Closer Chace Vacek would then enter the game and pitch a scoreless ninth to garner his fourth save of the season.
Heaston (3-4) got the win for San Angelo as he went 6.1 innings, allowing six hits, two runs (one earned) and one strikeout while walking four. Starter Turner Brasher took the loss for Amarillo as he allowed five runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings.
Despite the win, the Colts saw their playoff hopes dwindle. Laredo dominated Coastal Bend 7-1 Saturday to clinch a playoff spot, while Rio Grande Valley defeated Edinburg 5-2 to trim their magic number for a playoff berth down to one. The Colts must take the final two games of their series against Amarillo and hope for an Edinburg sweep of a doubleheader from Rio Grande Valley tomorrow to get in the playoffs.
Because Edinburg lost to Rio Grande Valley, Amarillo saw their magic number for clinching the ULB regular season title shrink to one. One more Amarillo win or another Edinburg loss would give the Dillas the title and the #1 seed in next week's ULB playoffs.
Game two between San Angelo and Amarillo will be Sunday with first-pitch scheduled for 6:05. The Colts will send out Gorman Romero (6-0, 3.73 ERA) who will be making his first start of the season. He will be opposed by Amarillo right-hander Ralph Roberts (1-4, 9.27 ERA). Sunday is also Fan Appreciation Night as every fan through the gates will receive a free gift bag while supplies last. Following the game will be a concert featuring The Maurice Davis Band. The broadcast of the game begins with the Kemps Pregame Show at 5:50, and can be heard on 1260 KKSA.
