
Broncos defeat Thunder, earn trip to 2010 United League playoffs

LAREDO, TX - The Broncos scored four runs in bottom of the second inning and cruised to the 7-1 victory over the Thunder, ensuring their first winning record in franchise history and punching their ticket to the 2010 United League playoffs.
The Broncos found themselves in a win and their in situation at Veterans Field taking on the Coastal Bend Thunder. RHP Santo Hernandez (8-3) made his 18th start of the year for the Broncos, sharing the mound with RHP J.J Trujillo (5-8) of the Thunder.
After the Broncos went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first they brought home four runs in the bottom of the second against Trujillo. Jose Canseco walked and came home on an RBI double by Jonathan Cisneros. Salvador Paniagua followed with his 22nd home run of the year, a two run shot to make it 3-0 Broncos. Nick Mahin, after a Carlos Arroyo fly out, put one out of the ball park. Mahin's 11th home run of the season gave the Broncos the 4-0 lead.
The Broncos added a run in the bottom of fourth when Nick Mahin reached on a fielding error by second base man Mike Lewis. Mahin then stole second and on the play a throwing charged to the catcher Travis Adams allowed Mahin to go to third base. Ryan Flynn drove in Mahin with a sacrifice fly to left field and the Broncos led 5-0.
Hernandez retired the first nine batters he faced, turning in three consecutive 1-2-3 innings until a lead off walk to Lamar Guy in the top of the fourth. Hernandez then retired the next six batters he faced. The Thunder had one base runner through the first five innings of the ball game.
Laredo added another run in the bottom of the fifth on a lead off double by Pacheco followed by a single by Jose Canseco and a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Cisneros to make it a 6-0 Broncos lead.
Hernandez allowed the first hit to the Thunder in the top of the sixth, a single off the bat of Ron Fenwick, Hernandez eventually stranded the bases loaded to hold the 6-0 Broncos lead.
Laredo added yet another run to their lead in the bottom of the seventh on a two out Rbi double by Jonathan Cisneros that scored Jose Canseco who had singled. The Broncos now had a 7-0 lead.
Hernandez was pulled after seven strong innings where he allowed one hit, two walks, and no runs while striking out five Thunder batters. Hernandez picked his eighth win of the season.
RHP Alex Morales (1-1), LHP Thomas Vessella (0-1) combined for a scoreless eighth inning striking out the side.
The Thunder plated a run in the top of the ninth to avoid the shut-out, but the Broncos hel on for the 7-1 victory and with the win, will play for the United League Championship beginning Tuesday August 31st at Veterans Field.
