EDINBURG - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings clinched their first playoff berth since 2007 by beating the Edinburg Roadrunners 13-2 in seven innings in game one of a doubleheader on Sunday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The WhiteWings (47-44) will either finish third or fourth, while the Roadrunners (49-39) will finish second. The Amarillo Dillas have clinched first place while the Laredo Broncos have a magic number of two to clinch a third place finish.

The WhiteWings struck against Tim Haines (3-11) right away when Luany Sanchez hit his sixth home run of the season with one out in the top of the first to make it 1-0.

The Roadrunners responded against Misael DeJesus (9-5) in the bottom of the first. With one, Felix Molina doubled and Nelson Teilon and Daryl Jones drew back-to-back walks. Wilson Batista followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.

The WhiteWings sent 10 batters to the plate to score five runs in the top of the second. Brian Nichols and Arlon Quiroz led off with singles. After a sacrifice bunt, Eric Gonzalez hit a hopper to short. The throw to the plate was in time to get Nichols. Roberto Rodriguez followed with a bunt. Haines dove to try to tag Quiroz, but missed as the run scored. Javis Diaz followed with a two-run double and Sanchez and Yeurys Tejeda hit back-to-back RBI-doubles to make it 6-1 WhiteWings.

The Roadrunners loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the third. Batista hit a sacrifice fly to make it 6-2.

Nichols and Quiroz led off the top of the fifth with singles and Dotel hit a two-run double to knock out Haines. One out later, Rodriguez hit an RBI-single against Carlos Rangel to make it 9-2.

The WhiteWings added two runs in the top of the sixth and two more in the top of the seventh to complete the scoring.

The WhiteWings and Roadrunners complete the regular season in game two of this doubleheader in about 30 minutes. Left-hander Tate Kelly (0-0) is expected to right-hander Mark DiBernardo (8-5).
