MIDLAND, Mich. - A West Michigan Whitecaps (6-6) seven-run fifth inning overshadowed a Jackson Ferris eight-strikeout night for the Great Lakes Loons (6-6). A 10-0 Whitecaps win on a 56-degree and cloudy Thursday night at Dow Diamond.
The Loons were shutout for the second time this season. Great Lakes left six on base.
Half of West Michigan's runs were generated by the longball. Luke Gold hammered a two-run homer to deep right field in the second inning. Josh Crouch's first home run and first four RBI of this season came on one swing, a grand slam in the fifth inning.
Jackson Ferris worked 4.2 innings, ending three innings with strikeouts. The first, third, and fourth innings. The left-hander struck out the side in the first. In the fifth inning, the third time through the lineup, he allowed a leadoff double but came back with his eighth strikeout and a flyout. Ferris' eight K's were one off his career-high and matched a Loons season-high.
After the second out in the fifth, Joel Ibarra entered, and the Whitecaps reached six straight. Three walks and a single buoyed the Crouch grand slam.
Chris Campos was a positive out of the pen, working three scoreless with three strikeouts in his 2024 season debut.
Rounding Things Out Great Lakes permitted one grand slam in 2023 two have been hit by opposition in 2024.
