Dayton Dragons News Release
Comstock Park, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps (22-7, 63-33) spotted the Dayton Dragons (13-15, 48-50) four runs in the top half of the first inning before coming back to take the third game of the series, scoring eight unanswered runs off of Dragons pitching. With the win the âCaps move 30 games over .500 while the Dragons drop to two games under the break even mark.
For the first time in the series, the Dragons were the first to get on the scoreboard, starting quickly with four first inning runs off âCaps starter Sendy Vasquez (ND). Mike DeJesus led off the game with a single to left and after moving to second on a wild pitch scored on a Mike Griffin double. The 1-0 lead was the first lead of the series for the Dragons, who lost 4-2 on Thursday and 4-0 on Friday. Habelito Hernandez and Bobby Mosby added RBI singles and Jay Bruce scored on a West Michigan error to run the lead to 4-0.
The âCaps battled back against Dragons starter Daniel Guerrero (LP, 1-2), chipping away at the 4-0 lead eventually tying the game in the bottom of the fifth inning picking up a pair of runs. West Michigan scored single runs in the second and third innings on a pair of SAC flies from Justin Justice in the second and Cameron Maybin in the third. Two runs in the fifth inning tied the game at 4-4 as Matt Joyce knocked home a pair with an RBI double to right that got over the head of outfielder B.J. Szymanski.
After the top of the first inning, Vasquez settled down and at one point retired 15 consecutive hitters before Szymanski reached on a one out walk in the sixth. Matt Rusch (WP, 8-3) tossed 1.1 innings to pick up the win. Anthony Claggett (ND) and Phil Napolitan (ND) combined to blank the Dragons over the final 2.0 innings as Dayton managed just one hit and three base runners after the top half of the first inning.
West Michigan broke the 4-4 tie with one run off Guerrero in the sixth inning and then three more off of the Dayton bullpen. Logan Ondrusek (ND) gave up two runs on two hits with three K's and three walks in 1.1 innings. Bo Lanier surrendered a single run on three hits and two walks in 0.2 innings.
