
Four run first erased in Whitecaps win

COMSTOCK PARK - Sendy Vasquez allowed four Dayton runs on four hits and a walk in the first inning, but then retired 15 batters in a row as the Whitecaps rallied for an 8-4 victory over the Dragons. West Michigan is 63-33 overall and 30 games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 1997 season when the Whitecaps finished 92-39.
After scoring in each the second and third innings, the Whitecaps tied the game on a two-run double by Matt Joyce in the fifth.
Pedro Cotto drew an RBI walk to put West Michigan in front, 5-4 in the sixth. It was one of six walks issued by Dayton pitchers. Three of those walks went to Cotto.
Mark Haske, Mike Hernandez and Will Rhymes each had three hits for the Whitecaps. Rhymes and Justin Justice each had two RBI.
Matt Rusch (8-3) pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win, which is his eighth win in relief this season.
The Dragons managed just one hit after the first inning: a one-out single by Eric Eymann in the seventh.
West Michigan tallied 16 hits and has 30 hits total in the first three games of the series. 28 of the 30 hits have been singles.
The Whitecaps are 22-7 in the second half, matching their high-water mark of 15 games over .500 in the first half.

Fourth Four Game Sweep? West Michigan will try for its fourth four game sweep of the season on Sunday against the Dragons. RHP Rafael Gonzalez (0-1, 33.75) will be on the mound for Dayton against RHP Josh Rainwater (4-3, 3.95) for the Whitecaps.
