Rattlers Rally Against Bees Bullpen

Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (10-19, 37-62) rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh to beat the Burlington Bees (12-17, 47-49) 5-3 at Community Field tonight. The Timber Rattlers have won two in a row against the Bees for the first time this season and lead this series 2-1.

Bees' starter Chris Nicoll turned in another strong performance. In six innings, he allowed just one run on three hits and struck out five. The only run came on a solo homer by Chris Minaker leading off the top of the fourth inning. Nicoll lowered his team-leading ERA to 2.63 which ranks sixth in the Midwest League. The Bees built a 3-1 lead for Nicoll against Rattlers starter Nick Allen. Jeff Howell drew a leadoff walk in the second, went to second on an errant pickoff attempt by Allen, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brady Everett, and scored on a bounce out by Carlos Arroyo. Everett extended the lead to 2-1 with a solo homer in the fourth. It was his second homer of the series and his fifth of the year. The Bees have hit a home run in four straight games, matching their season-high. In the fifth, Mario Lisson led off with a single, stole second, and Miguel Vega walked to knock Allen out of the game. Roman Martinez hit Howell with a pitch to load the bases, but limited the damage to just one run by getting Everett to bounce into a double play as Lisson scored and getting Arroyo to groundout to end the inning.

Yovany Damico took over for Nicoll in the top of the seventh inning. Robby Hudson led off with a single, stole second, and went to third when Jeremy Jirschele missed the throw at second. Damico walked Alex Gary, but got Kevin Reynolds to pop out to short right for the first out. Mike Saunders lined a single to right field that knocked in Hudson, advanced Gary to third, and cut the Bees lead to 3-2. Cody Harkcom replaced Damico on the mound to face Minaker who hit a fly ball into right-center field that was deep enough to score Gary for a sacrifice fly and tied the game at three. Saunders then stole second and scored when Johan Limonta chopped a double down the left field line. The throw into second went off of Jirschele's glove and he was charged with his second error of the inning as Limonta went to third. Travis Scott sealed the rally by lining a single to right to drive in Limonta and give the Rattlers a 5-3 lead.

Wisconsin's bullpen continued to hold the Bees in check. Juan Colon pitched a scoreless seventh and retired the first batter in the eighth. Lane Beus finished the final two outs in the eighth. Ethien Santana reached on an error to start the ninth, but Austin Bibens-Dirkx never allowed him past first base and finished the game for his second save. Martinez (1-4) gets credit for the win. Damico (1-5) gets saddled with the loss and Harkcom is charged with his first blown save.

The Bees and Rattlers finish this series tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 at Community Field. RH Erik Cordier (1-1, 1.64) will make his first start at Community Field for the Bees against LH David Asher (1-0, 3.38) of the Rattlers. The gates open at 1:00 for a Louisa Communications Kids Day. Little Leaguers and Boy & Girl Scouts in uniform get in free and a church bulletin is worth $2 off admission for each member of your family. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 1:40.
