Kane County Cougars News Release
South Bend, IN - After battling back from a 4-0 deficit to grab a 5-4 lead, the Kane County Cougars saw South Bend answer their rally with one of their own and lost a one run decision Saturday night, 7-6.
Trailing 4-0 in the fifth inning, Kane County sent nine batters to the plate, connected for six hits and scored five times to grab a one run lead. Todd Johnson, Chad Boyd and Jose Pineda all singled in runs and Steve Kleen's two RBI double put the finishing touches on the come back and the Cougars led 5-4.
But, South Bend took advantage of a Justin Sellers error to open their half of the inning and went on to score twice in that frame, adding another run in the sixth to recapture the advantage, 7-5.
The Cougars turned a two out walk into a run in the eighth inning. After Isaac Omura's free pass, a balk sent him to second and Frank Martinez followed with an RBI single to get Kane County to within 7-6. Still trailing by that margin entering the ninth inning, the Cougars would see Justin Sellers open with a base on balls. After a Johnson singleput runners at first and second, Chad Boyd took the count to within one pitch of a bases loaded situation but, after fouling off seven straight pitches, flied to right. Hawks closer Kyler Newby would then earn his seventh save by striking out both Pineda and Anthony Recker.
Vince Mazzaro gave up six of the seven South Bend runs and absorbed the loss to slip to 8-7. Jake Baxter recorded the win for South Bend to improve to 2-4.
These two teams will close their season's series Sunday afternoon with a 12:30 PM (CDST) contest before the Cougars move on to Cedar Rapids.
