July 22, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
The Devil Rays hosted a crowd of over 3,800 fans on Saturday night and they did not disappoint. The Rays defeated the Fort Wayne Wizards by a score of 4-2. Not only did the Wizards lose the game but they also lost a handful of their best players.
During the game the San Diego Padres traded away two of the five Wizards starting pitchers, Joel Santo and Fabian Jimenez, to the Chicago Cubs for pitcher Scott Williamson. Jimenez was supposed to be the starter in tomorrow's series finale. The Wizards also had three players injured on Saturday. The 2004 number one overall draft pick, Matt Bush, who came off of the DL on Friday, re-injured his hamstring. Second baseman Seth Johnston came up gimpy after reaching first base on a hit with a probable knee injury and Javis Diaz injured his finger while sliding back to first base. Diaz either dislocated or broke his finger because it was severely disfigured as he walked off of the field.
Mike Wlodarczyk took the start for the Rays and hurled six solid innings. Wlodarczyk allowed only three hits and one earned run in the contest. He fanned the side in the sixth inning and ended with seven strikeouts. He left the game with a 2-1 lead but lost the win when Kevin Lynn gave up a run.
Kevin Lynn entered in the seventh and lasted one and a third inning. Lynn ended his streak of 15 innings without giving up a run when Daryl Jones tripled to left-center and Matt Bush singled through the hole at shortstop to score Jones. Lynn finished by allowing three hits and one earned run.
Greg Dupas finished out the final 1.2 innings. He fanned two and gave up one hit. Dupas picked up his 21st save of the year.
Jackson Brennan had a great night at the plate. Brennan went 3-4 with one RBI and one run scored. He hit the game winning hit in the seventh inning which scored Neil Walton from second base. Alex Jamieson also had great game. He went 2-3 with a walk, a run scored, and an RBI. Jamieson led off the fifth inning with a towering home run to left field.
It seems as if Neil Walton has busted out of his slump because he had couple of hits to match his two from last night. One of Walton's hits was a double down the left field line in the fifth inning.
The Devil Rays and Wizards conclude their final regular season series at C.O. Brown on Sunday. The Devil Rays are hosting their final youth clinic of the year before the game on Sunday. Area kids will be at C.O. Brown to learn the basics from the pros. Devil Rays coaches and players will instruct the kids on hitting, fielding, pitching, base running and outfielding. It is also team photo and autograph day. The first 1,000 fans that enter the gates on Sunday will receive a free team photo that they can get signed by the team. After the clinic and before the game the Devil Rays will be signing autographs for fans in front of the dugout. As always it is McCullough Chiropractic Family Sunday and kids will get to run the bases after the game! Members of the United Educational Credit Union Kids Club will be able to attend for free. There will also be a post game concert from the local Christian Rock band "Disciples Peak" in the Family Fun Park. Sunday's game is sponsored McCullough Family Chiropractic and Soft Rock 95.3.
