Whitecaps rally past Lugnuts in series opener

LANSING- Chris Robinson went 4-5 and drove in a run as part of a three-run rally in the ninth inning as visiting West Michigan(72-65, 39-28) stunned the Lugnuts(68-68, 31-36) with a 6-4 comeback win in front of 4,980 fans on Friday evening at Oldsmobile Park.

The Whitecaps jumped out to the early lead as they scored single runs in each of the first three innings off Lansing starter Hector Delgadillo(ND). Nick McIntyre scored the game's first run when he reached with a one-out bunt single, went to second on a groundout and scored on a passed ball by Lugnuts catcher David Corrente.

Lansing tied the score in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout by Charlie Anderson and after West Michigan retook the lead in the second on a two-out RBI single by Luis Sabino, the Lugnuts struck for three runs in the bottom of the inning against West Michigan starter Luke French(ND).

Ryan Klosterman scored on an RBI single by Josh Lex to tie the game and a one-out RBI double by Juan Peralta put the Lugnuts ahead 3-2. Later in the inning, an RBI single with two outs by Christian Snavely plated Peralta to make it 4-2.

After giving up an RBI to Brent Dlugach in the third, Delgadillo worked through the fifth inning in his Lansing debut. He walked four and allowed a pair of earned runs while giving up four hits and striking out one.

The bullpens kept the 4-3 score until the ninth. A diving catch by Charlie Anderson in the seventh kept the Whitecaps from tying things up, but the visitors got to Connor Falkenbach (1-1) in the ninth.

Jeff Frazier reached on an infield single with one out and stole second base. With two outs, Clete Thomas reached on a second infield hit, moving Frazier to third. Dlugach then singled to right to tie the score and Josh Lee and Robinson followed with RBI singles to complete the comeback. Lansing went in order in their half of the ninth against Kevin Ardoin(5-1), who retired all nine batters he faced in his three innings of relief to get the win.

The series with West Michigan continues tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. as right hander Juan Perez takes to the hill. West Michigan will counter with right hander Andrew Kown. LAFCU Fireworks will follow the game.
