Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
BATTLE CREEK, MICH. -- The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays surpassed last year's attendance in just their 61st home date during a 5-4 victory over the Swing of the Quad Cities at C.O. Brown Stadium on Friday night.
Jarrad Lavergne continued his current streak of solid pitching with seven innings allowing only four hits, two walks, five strikeouts and one unearned run. The Rays scored four times in the leadoff frame with a Shaun Cumberland run scoring ground out, Patrick Breen RBI single and a two-run double by Tommy Nichols.
The Devil Rays added an insurance run in the fourth on a Fernando Perez single. Perez stole two bases to bring his season total to 55 which is one short of the franchise record set in 2001 by Jason Maule.
The crowd of 1,414 brought the team's season total to 96,328. In 2004, the franchise drew 95,845. Southwest Michigan has three more home games this season to extend the increase.
Brandon Mann will start for the Devil Rays on Saturday against Mark McCormick for the Swing of the Quad Cities. The night will feature post-game Fireworks for the final time in 2005. Devil Rays playoff tickets are on-sale now for the Wednesday, September 7 game at 6:35 p.m. against either South Bend or Fort Wayne by calling 269-660-2287 or going to southwestmichigandevilrays.com.
