
Beloit blasts Timber Rattlers

BELOIT, WI -- The Beloit Snappers scored six times in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull away from the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers for a 10-4 win Friday night at Pohlman Field. David Winfree and Paul Kelly each had three hits. Kelly added a two run homer and the Snappers moved closer to clinching a second half playoff spot.
Wisconsin (74-62 overall, 35-31 second half) got on the board first. Chris Colton lined a 2-1 pitch over the centerfield wall to start the third inning for his twelfth home run of the season.
Beloit (68-69, 35-32) took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. A run scoring fielder's choice by Landon Burt got the first run home. Winfree blooped in a two-out RBI single to give the Snappers the lead.
Beloit added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to push their way to a 4-1 lead. Both runs scored as a result of Timber Rattler errors.
The Snappers put the game away in the bottom of the seventh inning with six runs. Jeremy Pickrel made it 6-1 with a two-run double. Trevor Plouffe followed with an RBI double. One batter later Kelly hit a two run homer. Later in the inning, Chris Brown hit another double to drive in a run and the score was 10-1.
Jeff Clement drove in the second Rattler run of the night with a double to rightcenter in the top of the eighth.
Wisconsin added two runs in the ninth on an RBI double by Omar Falcon and an RBI single by Brent Johnson.
Kyle Waldrop was the winning pitcher he gave up one run on seven hits over 5-1/3 innings. Mark Lowe took the loss. He also pitched 5-1/3 innings allowed six hits and four runs (three earned).
In the Midwest League second half playoff race. Quad Cities lost, Cedar Rapids beat Kane County, and Peoria lost.
Beloit's win moves them to within one game of Western Division leading Quad Cities. The loss by Kane County drops them into a tie with Cedar Rapids one game behind the Snappers. The Peoria loss eliminates the Chiefs from playoff contention. There are three games left in the regular season.
Game two of the Rattler-Snapper series is Saturday night. Aaron Jensen (9-13, 5.82ERA) is set to be the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Beloit plans on Kevin Slowey (3-1, 2.34ERA) on being their starter. Game time is 7:00pm.
