Whitecaps Earn Comeback Win

Dayton, OH - The West Michigan Whitecaps came from behind to defeat the Dayton Dragons Tuesday night, 9-4 in the first game of a 4-game series at Fifth Third Field in Dayton. Matt Hoffman went 8 innings, giving up 2 runs on 7 hits, while striking out 6 and walking just one for the Whitecaps. Hoffman is 5-0 and at one point retired 16 of 17 Dayton hitters.

Dayton scored first when Frank Pfister doubled in two runs in the second. The Whitecaps cut the lead in half when Luis Salas hit his first home run of the year leading off the fifth.

The Whitecaps broke the game open in the seventh when they sent 10 men to the plate and scored 5 runs after two were out. The tying run scored on a throwing error by Dayton pitcher Andrew Bowman as Brent Wyatt reached base, Billy Nowlin crossing the plate. Ben Guez was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game to load the bases, then the go-ahead run scored when Brandon Douglas was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. After Bryan Pounds walked to drive in another run, Ronnie Bourquin delivered a two run single. Ben Guez (2), Bourquin (1), and Nowlin (2) each homered for the Whitecaps in the 9th. Stephen Chapman (1), homered for Dayton in the 9th and Miguel Rojas singled home Kevin Coddington, who had doubled, for the final run of the night.

Lost in the Dayton loss was a fine pitching performance by Dragons starter, J.C. Sulbaren. He went five innings, gave up 1 run on 4 hits, walked none and struck out eight.

The Whitecaps will take on the Dayton Dragons again Wednesday night in game two of the 4-game series at Fifth Third Field in Dayton at 7pm. Casey Crosby (2-0) will pitch for West Michigan against theDragons Matt Fairel (1-2). Game time is 7pm.
