Peoria Chiefs News Release

PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced that outfielder Cliff Andersen has been activated from the seven-day disabled list. As a corresponding roster move, catcher Mario Mercedes has been placed on the disabled list for the second time this season with a right calf injury.

Andersen, a 9th round pick in 2006 out of Sandy, Utah, was hitting .296 for the Chiefs before hitting the DL with a hamstring injury. In 11 games, the left-handed hitting outfielder scored four runs and recorded three RBIs, with all three coming on a bases clearing triple at Wisconsin in late April. This is Andersen's second year in Peoria. Last season, the 21 year-old hit .221 with three homers and 21RBIs in 106 games for the Chiefs.

Mercedes was signed as a free agent by the Cubs in 2003. So far this season Mercedes has appeared in 10 games and hit a solid .304 with a homer and four runs driven-in in 23 at-bats. A La Romana, Dominican Republic native, Mercedes makes his second trip to the DL this year, after missing time with a calf injury from April 16-26 earlier this season. He was activated on April 27 when Andersen was sent to the disabled list.

The Chiefs open a four-day, five-game series Tuesday with a doubleheader against Quad Cities. RH Marcus Hatley (1-1, 5.40) will oppose River Bandits RH Scott McGregor (1-1, 6.75) in game one at 11:00 AM with a game two matchup of RH Justin Bristow (0-1, 7.00) vs RH Arquimedes Nieto (0-2, 3.54).
