SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Ryan Cook pitched seven quality innings to lead the South Bend Silver Hawks (17-14) to a 6-2 victory over Ryan Koch and the Lansing Lugnuts (11-19) on Tuesday night at Coveleski Stadium.

The opposing starters, Cook and Koch, had identically-pronounced names... but the similarities to their evening ended there.

Lansing's Koch (0-3) gave up 10 hits and five runs over four innings in dropping his third straight start.

South Bend's Cook (5-0), conversely, lasted seven strong innings, with his line sullied only by back-to-back solo home runs from Yohermyn Chavez (his seventh of the season) and Brian Van Kirk (his third) in the seventh inning.

Alfredo Marte collected four of South Bend's 16 base hits in the game, assisted by a 3-for-4 night from second baseman Jake Elmore. Alberto Diaz and Reynaldo Navarro each drove in a pair of runs for the Silver Hawks.

South Bend has defeated Lansing six times in eight meetings this season, quite the turnaround from a 2008 campaign in which the Lugnuts bested the Silver Hawks 18 times in 24 contests.

The two squads get an early start on Wednesday for the second game of the four-game series: 10:30 a.m. at The Cove.

Right-hander Henderson Alvarez (3-3, 3.86) will get the start for the Lugnuts in his first appearance since a nine-inning complete game vs. Peoria. Alvarez will be opposed by right-hander Sean Morgan (1-0, 2.55) of the Silver Hawks.
