Wheeler Deals Wings into First Place
May 31, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Jason Wheeler lowered his season ERA with Rochester to 1.54 with 8.0 shutout innings as the Red Wings beat the Indianapolis Indians 7-0 Monday night in front of 10,985 at Victory Field.
Wheeler (4-1) scattered five hits and did not walk a man while striking out five. He ran into trouble in the second inning as the Indians (25-24) opened the inning with singles from Josh Bell and Jason Rogers and a sacrifice bunt moved both men into scoring position. Wheeler then induced a ground ball right back to him, holding the runners, and a fly out to end the threat. Indianapolis had just four at-bats with runners in scoring position against Wheeler with two coming in that second frame.
The Red Wings (29-22) moved into a tie for first place in the International League North with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre thanks to Durham's comeback win against the RailRiders Monday. Rochester spread out its offense as five players drove in runs and seven different players scored for the Wings. Jorge Polanco finished 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Max Kepler, reinstated from the disabled list before the game, went 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Wilfredo Tovar drove in two with a triple among two hits.
The Wings outhit the Indians 10-6 as Rochester plated a run in the third, two in the fifth and four in the seventh inning.
Reigning IL Batter of the Week Byron Buxton was pulled before the bottom of the third inning as Danny Santana was hurt in the Majors. It was announced shortly after that Buxton will be recalled by the Twins as Santana was placed on the 15-day disabled list due to a left hamstring injury.
