Syracuse Mets News Release
Charlotte, NC - The Syracuse Chiefs fell to the Charlotte Knights, 7-4, Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark. The Knights scored four runs in the fourth inning on the way to a third straight win overall against the Chiefs and second straight to open the series. Brian Goodwin had three hits including a home run for Syracuse in the loss.
Charlotte (27-26) started the scoring in the first inning. Tim Anderson led off the game with a hit for the second night in a row, this time off Chiefs starter Taylor Hill. Two batters later, Jason Coats tripled to right field, scoring Anderson. Coats eventually scored on a throwing error on the relay by Jose Lozada to make the score 2-0 Knights.
Jason Bourgeois extended the lead to 3-0 in the second with his second home run of the year leading off the frame.
Syracuse (27-23) got on the board in the fourth inning. Brian Goodwin singled with one out against Anthony Ranaudo. He scored with two outs on Matt Skole's double to cut the deficit to 3-1.
But the Knights answered with a four spot in the bottom of the frame, with all the runs scoring with two outs. Nicky Delmonico hit the second Charlotte home run of the night to start the rally and push the score to 4-1. Hill then allowed a single to Leury Garcia and walked Omar Narvaez. Anderson followed with a double, scoring Garcia and chasing Hill from the game. Abel De Los Santos then came out of the bullpen and surrendered a single to Carlos Sanchez, plating two more runs for a 7-1 Knights lead.
The Chiefs rallied for three runs over the last two innings to cut the final deficit to three. Caleb Ramsey singled off Blake Smith to lead off the eighth and scored two batters later on Pedro Severino's double. Then in the ninth, Goodwin led off the inning with his fifth home run of the year, cutting the score to 7-3. Matt den Dekker followed with a double and Matt Skole singled, putting two runners on and the tying run on deck. Jason Martinson then singled home den Dekker to close the gap to 7-4. But Tommy Kahnle retired three batters in a row from there to end the game.
The Chiefs will try and avoid the sweep Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Austin Voth is slated to start for Syracuse opposite Scott Carroll for Charlotte.
