McGehee Mashes in Tuesday's Win
May 31, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Coming off a tough late inning loss to Louisville on Memorial Day, Toledo looked to return to their winning ways behind starter Shane Greene. Greene was optioned back to Toledo to make another start Tuesday as the right-hander continues to nurse a blister on his throwing hand.
Opposing Greene was left hander Chad Rogers who carried a 1.73 ERA into the ball game. Casey McGehee took it among himself to get things rolling off Louisville's crafty lefty in the top half of the first. After an Anthony Gose leadoff walk, a Dixon Machado single, and a Steven Moya walk, Rogers buckled down to retire the next two Hens. However, with two outs McGehee stepped to the plate and stroked a line drive single to right scoring both the fleet footed Gose and Machado to take a 2-0 lead.
Greene's only blemish came in the bottom of the second when Steve Selsky hammered a solo shot over the left field wall to lead off the inning. The slim right-hander had all of his pitches working over a strong 4 2/3 innings. Greene left after scattering five hits and striking out five.
In need of insurance, Lloyd McClendon's squad went to work at the plate once again in the bottom of the sixth when Casey McGehee sent a ringing double to right sending home Steven Moya and Chad Huffman to take a 5-1 lead. McGehee continues his tear at the plate as the veteran is hitting .305 after Tuesdays' game.
After Greene's departure, the Louisville offense tried to close the gap off Hens' reliever Drake Britton. The left-hander quickly surrendered back-to-back hits, and with one out walked Brandon Allen to load the bases. Seth Mejias-Brean took advantage of the bases loaded opportunity by dumping a soft single into center, scoring Jesse Winker, and Selsky as the lead was trimmed to 6-3.
With just a three run lead headed into the late innings for Toledo, Chad Huffman stepped to the plate with two on and one out in the seventh. Headed into the game on Tuesday the first baseman led the Hens and the entire International League in runs batted in (30) and Huffman added to that total off Bats' reliever Matt Magill. With Dixon Machado on first, Huffman sent a breaking ball deep into left center field and over the wall for his seventh round tripper of the season.
The five run lead was all Preston Guilmet needed out of the Hen Pen as he came into Tuesday's outing with a team leading 0.73 ERA. The shutdown right-hander continued his dominance over his two innings of work as he pitched a perfect seventh and eighth, striking out two. Bobby Parnell closed out the game in the ninth with a one, two, three inning, striking out one.
HELLO MOYA: Hens' cleanup hitter Steven Moya has continued his Toledo power surge since returning last weekend. In his three games since rejoining the club the 6'7" outfielder has gone 3-13 with 3 RBI at the plate, however two of the three hits have been home runs.
OH SNAP: Tuesday night's win snapped Louisville's 5 game winning streak, and gave the Hens their 22nd victory of the season. Toledo sits 6.0 games out in the IL West standings.
The two teams are back at it Wednesday for game three of the four game set. First pitch is set for 7:05 pm.
