Wheats to Face Tigers

Brandon, MB.-- For the second time in two weeks, two of the top teams in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Conference will collide Saturday night at Westman Place when the Brandon Wheat Kings close out a 2-game weekend home stand against the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers.

Led byEmerson Etem andHunter Shinkaruk, the Tigers rolled to a 5-2 victory in Medicine Hat on October 21st, scoring three goals in a span of less than two minutes en route to the win. Etem enters Saturday's game as the WHL's leading scorer with 22 goals and 36 points. The former first round draft choice of the National Hockey League's Anaheim Ducks, who is currently riding a 16-game point scoring streak, also leads the league with an impressive +17 plus / minus ranking.

While Etem leads the WHL scoring race, Brandon captainMark Stone is just one point behind with thirteen goals and 35 points. Like Etem, the Ottawa Senators' prospect is riding a 7-game goal scoring streak and goes into Saturday's game having scored at least a point in all of Brandon's seventeen games this season.

In addition toMichael Ferland's 29 points, including a team leading fifteen goals, the Wheat Kings also boast the top two scoring defencemen in the Western League. In seventeen games this season,Ryan Pulock has five goals and 19 points whileEric Roy has two goals and 19 points.

Pulock's fifth goal of the season came on a second period powerplay in a 5-2 victory over the visiting Calgary Hitmen Friday night.

Friday's victory vaulted Brandon past Regina and into sole posession of top spot in the East Division with a record of 11-5-0-1. The Tigers meanwhile sit second in the Central Division with an impressive 12-5-0 mark.

Saturday's game will mark the first ever meeting between theClouston brothers in Brandon. In six games played between the two during their WHL careers, Cory has the edge, having won four. All four of those victories came with him behind the bench in Kootenay, while Shaun was coaching the Tri-City Americans.

Tonight's game will also feature a specialSalute to Western Manitoba School Patrols. Over five hundred patrols from Brandon and surrounding area will be attending the game, courtesy of the Wheat Kings, theBrandon Police Service and four participating sponsors -CAA Manitoba, Canexus, Pauls' Hauling andManitoba Public Insurance.

In recognition of the hard work done by local patrols throughout the school year, one patrol from Brandon and one from Minnedosa will be performing the Ceremonial Opening face-off.
