Wheat Kings in Search of Eastern Title
March 15, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings will be looking to clinch their second Eastern Conference regular season pennant, in as many years tonight when they kick off the final week of regular season play with a game against the visiting Swift Current Broncos at Westman Communications Group Place.
The Wheat Kings, winners of six straight games, enter the game with a four point lead on the second place Lethbridge Hurricanes in the Conference.
That means Brandon needs a single point to clinch and to keep their hopes alive of catching the Victoria Royals and the Western Hockey League's regular season crown. In order to win the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy for the second straight season, the Wheat Kings would have to win all three remaining games and hope for the Royals to come up empty during their final three.
After trailing for most of the season, the Wheat Kings have put themselves in a position to win the Conference by going 14-3-2-0 since the first week of February.
"It seems like we're a focused group, it seems like we're playing playoff hockey starting now. It seems like our team is gearing up and it's go time," Wheat Kings' John Quenneville told CKLQ's Bruce Luebke this week. "You can feel it in the air around the rink -- practices, games, it feels like it's time to go.".
Quenneville is one of several Wheat Kings taking point scoring streaks into Tuesday's game. The New Jersey Devils' first round draft choice has points in six straight games while Ivan Provorov (7 games), Nolan Patrick (6 games), Macoy Erkamps (4 games) and Kale Clague (4 games) will be looking to extend theirs.
Meanwhile Jayce Hawryluk, who currently leads the team in scoring with 43 goals and 101 points, has goals in six straight games while linemate Tyler Coulter, who suffered a lower body injury during Saturday's win over Saskatoon, has managed at least a point in a career high seventeen games.
The Broncos enter the final week with a record of 24-36-6-3 and sit tenth in the Conference.
Following Tuesday's game the Wheat Kings will close out the regular season this weekend with games against Moose Jaw and Regina on Friday and Saturday nights.
Tickets to all three remaining home games - as well as the WHL club's first two playoff games - are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office. Fans can also order online at keystonecentre.com or by calling 726-3555.
Tuesday's game is also the final "2 for Tuesday" of the season, which means fans will receive a "free" ticket to the game when they purchase one at regular admission price. As well, the Keystone Centre will offer a number of concession specials tonight.
Puck drop is at 7pm and the game is a presentation of Red River Mutual.
