New-Look RedsÃÂ -ÃÂ The last time Nashville SC faced TorontoÃÂ FCÃÂ on June 23,ÃÂ the Boys in Gold came awayÃÂ with a dramatic 3-2 victory, earning the win with a Luke Haakenson goal in stoppage time. At that point,ÃÂ the Reds wereÃÂ in the midst ofÃÂ what would become a six-match losing streak thatÃÂ ledÃÂ to the dismissal of head coach Chris Armas in his first season on the job.
Since Armas was let go,ÃÂ Toronto has gone unbeaten with two wins and twoÃÂ draws andÃÂ has been able to return homeÃÂ toÃÂ play in front of their fans at BMO Field for the first time since early 2020. Head Coach Gary Smith says the Reds have plenty of talent thatÃÂ seem to have shaken their funk from the early season.ÃÂ
"This is as talented a group as any in MLS," Smith said. "History tells us that with as many final appearances and a championship under their belt, this group is more than capable. They've got quality in all areas of theÃÂ fieldÃÂ and it really is just a matter of time for them.ÃÂ Maybe this is a time when they're getting into a rhythm again, but our job is going to be to obviously stick a little bit of a pin in that and come out of there with some points on the board."
Terrific Trio in Attackà-àNashville SC's attacking trio of Hany Mukhtar, CJàSapongàand Randall Lealàscored oràassistedàon all but oneàgoal inàthe month of July.àThe club has also added a dynamic attacker in designated playeràAkéàLoba, who Smith saysàhas looked "absolutely stunning" in training.ÃÂ
Now the challenge becomes taking that offensive form on the road, while also balancing that form with a stout defense that delivers positive results.
"I do believe we've got as good an attacking group as we've had in the 18 months that I've been here in MLS," Smith said.ÃÂ "And to get that right balance now, the rightÃÂ amountÃÂ of minutes, sharpÃÂ andÃÂ fresh forwards, players that are looking to make a bit of a name for themselves, or to get the very best out of themselves now that there's that much more competition in that front line. But wrapped around that, of course, we've still got to make sure that we've got a good balance and a good foundation to the group. And while it's been something that we almost take for granted at times, there's no doubt about itÃÂ thatÃÂ there's a mentality and a focus needed."
Road Work AheadÃÂ -ÃÂ After a month with four out of five matchesÃÂ at home, Nashville SCÃÂ will hit the road for three consecutive home matches starting Sunday in Toronto.ÃÂ The first two will come thick and fast, as Nashville will travel toÃÂ FoxboroÃÂ to take on theÃÂ New EnglandÃÂ Revolution on Wednesday, just threeÃÂ daysÃÂ after playing in Toronto.ÃÂ
Defender Dave Romney says recovery and rotation will be key to earning results in both matches.ÃÂ
"Recovery is enormous," Romney said.ÃÂ "It's never easy just having those two days in between, just doing everything you can, hydrating-wise, recovery-wise, treatment-wise, rest-wise, sleep-wise to just make sure you can be as close to 100% for that Wednesday game,ÃÂ even though it's pretty near impossible.ÃÂ You'reÃÂ always going to startÃÂ kind of feelingÃÂ it in like the 60th minute onwards, and then just a rotation of bodies throughout the team.ÃÂ The moreÃÂ guys as we can get minutes on Sunday and WednesdayÃÂ kindÃÂ of switching out,ÃÂ theÃÂ fresherÃÂ we're going to be.ÃÂ We're going to look a lotÃÂ livelierÃÂ than the team we play on Wednesday."
