Iowa Chops News Release

The horn sounded, the puck was in the back of the net, and the game lie in question. Thus, was the ending of the Iowa Chops game against the Quad City Flames in front of a racous crowd of 7,971 at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, as the Iowa Chops used every second on the clock to defeat the Flames on Saturday, 2-1.

The Chops are making a habit of starting game strong lately and Saturday night was no exception as the Chops began the scoring on their very first power play of the game. Petri Kontiola found the back of the net thanks to a nice pass from Matt Beleskey and more help from Petteri Wirtanen. The remainder of the period was a physical one and another solid one for Iowa Chops goaltender David LeNeveu, who stopped all 10 Flames shots.

The 2nd period was a physical affair with two seperate fights. One matching Ryan Donally and Brad Brown, and the other Francis Wathier and John Armstrong. The Flames outshot the Chops 10-6 in the period, but Chops goaltender David LeNeveu held strong, securing the 1-0 Chops lead through two periods of play.

The 3rd period started with another Iowa Chops goal on the power play, courtesy of Petteri Wirtanen, who found a seam and fired a shot over the shoulder of Leland Irving. Brian Salcido and Matt Beleskey assisted. The rest of the period however was all Flames, as they outshot the Chops 17-2. Carsen Germyn would end David LeNeveu's shutout bid with a little more than five minutes to go to make it 2-1 Chops. At the end of the game and with one final shot, the Flames' Brandon Roach fired a slapshot from center ice that snuck through the legs of LeNeveu, but the officials ruled the clock had expired before the puck had crossed the line giving the Iowa Chops their first set of wins in back-to-back games since early February.
