Great Lakes Loons News Release

MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons were plagued by the bat of Whitecaps first baseman Aaron Westlake, who accounted for seven of West Michigan's 11 runs in the home team's loss Sunday in front of 5,017 Loons fans at Dow Diamond.

Westlake's biggest blow came during his at-bat in the third inning, a three-run home run to put his team up 5-0. The homer was a on a 3-1 pitch and was his sixth of the season. In the first inning, the lefty singled in Steven Moya, who hit into a fielder's choice earlier to put the "˜Caps on the board. In the fifth inning, Westlake was beaned by Jose Dominguez, but got the last laugh with a two-run double in the seventh. For good measure, Westlake knocked an RBI-groundout to first in the eighth. He finished the game with seven RBI, a triple shy of the cycle.

Making his first start for the Loons was Ralston Cash, who surrendered five runs on five hits through four innings of work. The right-hander was charged with the loss, his first, before Dominguez took over in the fifth inning. Dominguez limited the Whitecaps to four hits, one of which a triple to Eugenio Suarez, who scored on the play when Kevin Taylor sailed the ball over third into the visitor's dugout. In 2.1 innings, the Dominican allowed four runs, three earned, with two strikeouts and one walk.

The Loons got on the board in the fifth inning on a pair of lead-off extra-base hits. Joe Winker started out with a line-drive double to the right field corner and was brought home by Andrew Edge's triple up the third-base line to score the team's only run. Edge, who has only started in two games this year before today, went two-for-three, improving his batting average to .556.

"There's going to be games like that...no one wants them to come up," Edge said after the game. "We didn't have a lot go our way. [It was] just a rough start for everybody, you know. We have a good group of guys here, so we'll come back tomorrow and compete. We have a good ball club and we're trying to make a playoff run."

The loss drops the Loons below .500 (28-29) for the first time since April 28th, when they held an 11-12 record.

The Loons will host the final game of their brief three-game homestand against the West Michigan Whitecaps on Monday night at 7:05. Starting for the Loons will be RHP Ryan O'Sullivan (4-3, 3.42) against the Whitecaps RHP Tommy Collier (3-4, 2.60). Fans attending the game are encouraged to dress up for the Halloween Theme Night.

The Great Lakes Loons are a sixth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and are in the middle of their 5th Anniversary Celebration, which kicked off in August 2011 and will continue throughout the 2012 season.
