Dayton Dragons News Release
Bowling Green, Ky.-Kyle Waldrop, Nick O'Shea, and Juan Silva drilled three consecutive doubles in a three-run fifth inning to lift the Dayton Dragons to a 5-4 victory over the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Sunday afternoon. The two clubs have split the first two games of the series heading into Monday night's finale.
The Dragons broke a scoreless tie in the fifth as all three doubles reached the fence against Bowling Green starting pitcher Felipe Rivero, who entered the game with the third best earned run average in the Midwest League. O'Shea's double brought in Waldrop, and Silva drove in O'Shea to make it 2-0. Silva went to third on Brandon Dailey's fly out to center, and scored on Juan Perez's sacrifice fly to take a 3-0 lead.
The Hot Rods scored in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run by Alejandro Segovia to make it 3-1, but the Dragons answered with a run in the sixth. The first four Dragons batters drew walks in the sixth, including Waldrop's walk with the bases loaded to force in the fourth Dayton run of the day. Bowling Green cut the deficit back to two again in the bottom of the sixth on a solo homer by Todd Glaesmann to make it 4-2.
In the top of the seventh, Dayton's Sean Buckley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in another run and give the Dragons a 5-2 lead. Bowling Green countered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on Jake Hager's two-run single with no one out to make it 5-4.
Dayton reliever Ryan Kemp entered the game to pitch the eighth and gave up a lead-off double to Bowling Green's Josh Sale to start the inning. Sale reached third with one out, but Kemp struck out Tyler Goeddel for the second out and got Ryan Brett to ground out to third to preserve the lead.
Carlos Contreras replaced Kemp in the ninth and allowed a one-out walk and a two-out single to set up a first-and-second, two-out situation with the tying and winning runs on base. But Contreras got Sale to ground out to first base to end the game as he earned his fifth save.
The Hot Rods had the tying run in scoring position in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings but could not score. They went a combined 1 for 9 in the game with men in scoring position and stranded 11.
Dragons starting pitcher Daniel Tuttle, in his first game since May 12 after being sidelined with a strained right calf, tossed four shutout innings, allowing one hit and no runs with three walks and three strikeouts. He was not involved in the decision. Reliever Dan Jensen (3-5) was credited with the victory, working one and two-thirds innings and allowing two runs on four hits with a walk. James Allen replaced Jensen in the sixth and worked an inning and one-third, allowing two runs (one earned).
The Dragons finished with six hits. Selsky was 2 for 4 with a triple and a walk. The Dragons drew eight walks and had three hit batsmen. Dragons batters drew five walks in the sixth inning but they were limited to just one run.
The Dragons play at Bowling Green on Monday at 8:05 p.m. (WONE 980 AM) to wrap up the series as Dayton attempts to hand the Hot Rods their first home series loss of the year in their ninth set of 2012 at home. Radhames Quezada (2-6, 4.30) will start for Dayton against Bowling Green's Parker Markel (1-2, 6.00). The next home game is Wednesday, June 6 vs. the Lake County Captains.
Notes: Dragons manager Delino DeShields said before the game that he expects second baseman Ryan Wright to return to the lineup on Monday. Wright has missed the last five games with a sprained left wrist. He leads the Dragons in batting at .315...First baseman Sean Buckley was ejected from the game following his at-bat in the top of the ninth inning...Pitcher Jimmy Moran was assigned to Billings before the game to create a roster opening for Tuttle. Jensen will be moved to the bullpen as Tuttle claims a spot in the starting rotation...O'Shea returned to the lineup after missing four games with a bruised shin.
