Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CLINTON, Iowa - A day after Clinton walked-off with a home run, the Kernels had their own 9th inning to remember. Cedar Rapids (26-31) beat the LumberKings (20-36) due to 3 runs in the 9th inning, putting the game at its final score of 5-4.

Down 4-2 heading to the final frame, Kaleb Cowart and Frazier Hall singled to lead off the 9th. Trevor Hairgrove bunted, intending to move the runners over, but LumberKing third baseman Ramon Morla threw the ball into the outfield and Cowart scored. Abel Baker then grounded a ball the right side of the infield, and after a throw home, Hall slid under the tag to tie the game.

And after being tagged out at home on an infield grounder in the 8th inning, Chevy Clarke redeemed himself in the 9th with the go-ahead sacrifice fly. The Marietta, Georgia native hit the ball deep enough to right field that no throw home was made, and Hairgrove scored comfortably.

The Kernels other two runs came early in the Sunday matinee. Ryan Jones hit his 3rd home run of the year to cap off an 8-pitch at bat in the 3rd inning. With no one on base and 2 outs, Jones belted the full count pitch over the right field wall with feet to spare, then giving the Kernels a 2-0 lead.

In the 2nd inning, Hairgrove hit a lead-off double and eventually scored. A sacrifice fly by Matt Scioscia allowed Hairgrove to move to third base, then a Baker ground-ball out was enough to have Hairgrove score. Baker had 2 RBI on Sunday, despite going 0-4.

Kernels' starter Cam Bedrosian pitched his longest outing of the season despite taking the no decision. The right-hander went 5 1/3 innings, gave up 7 hits, allowed 4 runs - 2 in the 4th and 2 in the 5th, and struck out 1. Logan Odom, Frank De Jiulio, and Ty Kelley combined for the game's final 3 2/3 innings, and allowed just one hit and no runs.

De Julio (2-1) was the winning pitcher, while LumberKings closer Kyle Hunter (0-4) took the loss. Kelley earned his 9th save of the season, the most in the Angels minor league system. The Kernels conclude the three game series at Clinton on Monday evening at 7:00 p.m.
