
Walk-off homer downs Kernels in Clinton

CLINTON, Iowa - Clinton's Jamal Austin hit a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the 9th inning to down the Kernels 4-3 on Saturday night. It was Austin's 1st home run of the season, and it came off of Kernels reliever Carmine Giardina with one out to break a 3-3 tie. Giardina (2-4) took the loss, going 1.1 innings. The home run was the only hit and run he allowed.
Tim Griffin (3-1) picked up the win in relief for the LumberKings, going one inning while allowing no runs on no hits. The LumberKings scored a run in the 1st inning, taking a 1-0 lead. Jamal Austin drew a leadoff walk and later came home to score on a RBI groundout by Ji-Man Choi.
Clinton took a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning after three straight singles to begin the frame. Dillon Hazlett's RBI single was the third of the three, and it scored Guillermo Pimentel to give the LumberKings a two run advantage. The Kernels scored their first run in the 3rd inning, cutting Clinton's lead to 2-1. Abel Baker led off with a single to left field and came home on Kevin Moesquit's two out RBI single to center.
The Kernels took a 3-2 lead in the 4th inning on Chevy Clarke's 2-RBI single with two outs. The single scored Frazier Hall and Andy Workman and chased LumberKings starter Richard Vargas. Vargas went 3.2 innings and allowed three runs on four hits while striking out two and walking two. The lead was short-lived as Clinton's Guillermo Pimentel drove a Jairo Diaz pitch over the wall in right in the bottom of the 4th inning, tying the game 3-3. It was Pimentel's 3rd home run of the season.
Diaz went seven innings and allowed three runs on nine hits while striking out three and walking two. The Kernels continue the commuter series at Clinton on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
