
Hawks Comeback Bid Falls Short in Extra-Inning Loss

The South Bend Silver Hawks (29-28) erased a 6-1 ninth-inning deficit to send the game to extra innings before falling to the Lansing Lugnuts 9-6 in 10 innings Sunday afternoon at Coveleski Stadium.
With Dayton's win against Bowling Green, the Silver Hawks remain two games behind the Hot Rods in the Eastern Division wildcard chase.
Kable Hogben (2-2) got hit with the loss for South Bend, allowing three runs - two earned - on three hits over two innings. Ajay Meyer (3-1) got the win for Lansing, surrendering one earned run on three hits over two innings.
Trailing 6-1 entering the last of the ninth inning, the Silver Hawks rallied for five runs on six hits to tie the game.
Tom Belza provided the game-tying hit, an RBI base hit to left field. Marc Bourgeois and Ender Inciarte each tallied RBI doubles in the inning. Bryan Henry singled in a run and Niko Gallego added an RBI ground out in the frame. In total, ten men came to the plate in the inning.
In extra innings, Lansing responded with three runs in the top of the tenth inning. With the bases loaded, K.C.
Hobson lined a two-RBI base hit to left field, scoring Carlos Perez and Chris Hawkins. On the same play, Kevin Pillar was awarded home plate after defensive interference was called on Roidany Aguila.
Right-hander Blake Perry started for South Bend and did not make it out of the first inning. Perry allowed three runs - all earned - on one hit over 0.2 inning. The right-hander issue five walks and did not tally a strikeout.
Left-hander David Rollins got the nod for the Lugnuts, hurling five scoreless innings with four walks and four strikeouts.
Bourgeois paced South Bend offensively, finishing 3-for-3 with two walks. Henry added two hits for South Bend.
Keith Hessler recorded the final out of the first inning and tossed a scoreless second frame. J.R. Bradley worked 4.1 innings and allowed two runs - one earned - on five hits over 4.1 innings. Matt Sample went 1.2 innings and allowed one earned run on two hits.
Outfielders Markus Brisker and Kenny Wilson each notched three hits for Lansing.
The Silver Hawks and Lugnuts meet again Monday at 10:35 a.m. from Coveleski Stadium. Right-hander Archie Bradley (6-2, 4.14) starts for South Bend and he will be opposed by right-hander Marcus Walden (3-1, 2.96).
