Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power shut out the Kannapolis Intimidators 2-0 on Friday night at Appalachian Power Park. Kyle McPherson struck out nine over seven innings and Rogelio Noris hit his third home run of the season to lead the Power.
McPherson and Intimidators starter Terry Doyle pitched well throughout the game. Doyle matched his career high with 14 strikeouts over seven innings and allowed just one run on Noris' fourth inning leadoff shot to left field. Each starting pitcher surrendered only four hits as the game remained 1-0 after seven innings.
In the eighth, the bullpens took over for each club. Maurice Bankston allowed three hits in the top half of the inning, but saw his defense work a double play for the first two outs. Bankston struck out Nicolas Ciolli to close the eighth.
In the home half, Intimidators reliever Garrett Johnson gave up a double, walked a batter, and allowed a bunt base hit to load the bases with no outs. Johnson then hit Jarek Cunningham with a 1-0 pitch to bring in the final run. West Virginia could not generate any other offense despite having the bases loaded with no one out.
Bankston walked a batter with two outs in the ninth, but induced Jake Oester to fly out to right to end the game. McPherson (2-3) earned the win, while Doyle (3-2) was charged with the loss. Bankston's two inning effort resulted in his first save of the season. Evan Chambers had the lone multi-hit game for the Power, which snapped a two game losing streak and completed it third shutout of the year. Daniel Wagner had two hits for the Intimidators, which were shutout for the third time this year.
West Virginia and Kannapolis play game two of this four-game series on Saturday night at 7:05 pm. Gabriel Alvarado and Cameron Bayne are the scheduled starters for the Power and Intimidators, respectively.
