Lexington Legends News Release
CHARELSTON, WV. - Dave Qualben shutdown West Virginia for the second time in seven days to help the Lexington Legends knock off the first place Power 3-2 on Friday night.
Qualben (4-1) was outstanding with six innings allowing two runs on four base hits to become the Legends first four game winner. Victor Garate and Santo Luis combined for three scoreless innings. Luis (S,7) earned the save with a scoreless ninth inning.
As good as Qualben was, West Virginia got to the lefty in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Darren Ford singled to left field past the diving Koby Clemens. Ford stole second base and scored on Chuckie Caufield's two-out single to centerfield.
Lexington tied the game with a run in the third inning. Greg Buchanan ripped a one-out double to left field and went to third on an unsuccessful double steal attempt with Chris Johnson, who walked. Buchanan scored from third on a wild pitch by Brae Wright.
The Legends grabbed the lead in the fourth inning. Clemens clubbed a solo home run off of the left field foul pole to make it 2-1. The Legends took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning on Cesar Quintero's solo homer.
Brent Brewer cut the Legends in half with deep home run to left field in the bottom half of the sixth inning to make it 3-2.
The Legends and the Power will hook up for game two of the four game series on Saturday night. The Legends will start lefty Doug Arguello (1-2) while the Power will counter with J.T. King (3-0).
The first pitch is set for 7:05 pm at Appalachian Power Park. Legends network coverage will begin at 6:50 pm on ESPN Sports Radio 1300, WLXG. Fans can also listen on the world-wide-web by logging onto www.lexingtonlegends.com.
