Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, Ga. - Infielder Jake Eigsti is the newest member of the Sand Gnats roster, the New York Mets announced Friday. Eigsti replaces 18-year-old shortstop Juan Lagares, who was transferred to extended spring training in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Eigsti is expected to be active for Friday night's game against the Rome Braves.
The Mets drafted Eigsti in the 29th round of the 2006 amateur draft out of Indiana State University. Last year he hit .194 in 25 games with the Brooklyn Cyclones of the New York-Penn League. In his senior year at ISU, Eigsti hit .300 with 6 home runs and 34 RBI.
Lagares was in the midst of a team best 10-game hit streak, but struggled in the field with 12 errors in 22 games at shortstop. This is the first full season of minor league baseball for Lagares.
The Gnats start a three-game series against the Braves tonight at 7:05 p.m. Immediately following the game will be Friday Night Fireworks. For tickets and a complete schedule visit www.sandgnats.com or call the office at 912-351-9150.
