West Virginia Overcomes Early Deficit in 12-9 Win over Legends

The West Virginia Power overcame a five-run deficit and went on to a 12-9 win over the Lexington Legends Wednesday night in the Legends final road game of the 2015 season. The Power had 18 hits in the game, the Legends 13.

The Legends opened the scoring when Wander Franco led off the top of the second with his 10th home run of the season, but the Power tied the game in the bottom of the second when Elvis Escobar tripled with two outs and scored on a double by Chase Simpson.

Lexington took a 4-1 lead with three runs in the third inning. DonAndre Clark singled with one out, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. After Austin Bailey walked, Chad Johnson doubled to left field, scoring Clark as Bailey went to third. Franco flied out, but Anderson Miller's single scored Bailey and Johnson.

The Legends added two runs in the fourth. With one out, Alexis Rivera doubled and moved to third on a single by Michael Hill. After Hill stole second, Clark flied out, but Bailey tripled to right field, scoring Rivera and Hill, and the Legends had a 6-1 lead.

West Virginia responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to one. Singles by Jerrick Suiter, Pablo Reyes and Escobar produced a run. With Reyes at third, Escobar stole second, and after Simpson struck out, Francisco Diaz singled, scoring Reyes, and Escobar came home on an error by Miller in center field. Kevin Newman's two-out single scored Tito Polo, who had reached second on a fielder's choice and a stolen base.

The Power took command with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Singles by Connor Joe and Suiter and a walk to Reyes loaded the bases. Escobar's single brought home a run, another scored on a passed ball, and Simpson drove in two with a double. A single by Diaz scored Simpson, and the Power led 10-6.

West Virginia scored a run in the sixth to make the score 11-6. Each team added a run in the seventh, West Virginia's coming on a leadoff homer by Polo, his third of the season.

Hill led off the top of the ninth with his fifth home run of the season, and the Legends added one more on Johnson's run-scoring single for the final margin.

Jake Burnette (5-4), who relieved starter Alex McRae at the start of the fifth inning, got the win. Legends reliever Nik Stephenson (4-9) was the losing pitcher.

West Virginia won four of five games in the series. The Legends return home for a five-game series against the Hagerstown Suns to close out the season. Game time Thursday night is 7:05 p.m.
