Asheville Tourists News Release
ASHEVILLE, NC-- The South Atlantic League has announced that a protest of Tuesday night's game between the Charleston RiverDogs and Asheville Tourists, submitted by the Tourists, has been upheld. Here is a summary of the play being protested:
In the bottom of the ninth inning with one out and Charleston runner Bo Thompson on third base and Austin Aune on second base, Charleston batter Donny Sands hit a ground ball to Asheville first baseman Josh Fuentes. Fuentes fielded the ground ball and threw it home in an attempt to retire the runner from third base (Bo Thompson) trying to score. The runner was ruled safe at home by the home plate umpire. Austin Aune had advanced to third base.
Immediately following the play at home, Asheville Manager Warren Schaeffer ran to question the home plate umpire. The home plate umpire called time while simultaneously executing the umpire mechanic (signal) indicating that time has been called.
After time had been called, Asheville catcher Dom Nunez threw the ball to the shortstop in an attempt to retire the batter?runner Donny Sands who was in between first and second base. Sands was then caught in a rundown between first and second base. During the rundown involving Sands, baserunner Austin Aune decided to try to score from third base. Aune crossed home plate and scored.
Asheville contends that the play should have ended immediately when the home plate umpire called "time" and raised his hands (to execute the umpire mechanic to signal time has been called.) Asheville also contends that the game should be resumed from that point, with the score tied 3?3 in the bottom of the 9th inning, with runners on first (Donny Sands) and third (Austin Aune) and one out for Charleston. "As President of the South Atlantic League, I have decided to uphold the protest by the Asheville Tourists," stated Eric Krupa in a Press Release. "The game will be resumed with the score tied 3?3 in the bottom of the 9th inning, with runners on first (Donny Sands) and third (Austin Aune) and one out for Charleston."
Per league rules, the resumption/completion of last night's game must be played before tonight's regularly?scheduled game. The lineup cards from last night's game will remain in effect. The lineup and batting order for the resumption of play will be exactly the same as the lineup and batting order at the moment time was called.
